Diet Green Tea Caffeine

Question: Is Green Tea good for you despite the fact that it contains caffeine?

I really want to start drinking green tea now as part of my new healthy diet regime but i'm worried about the caffeine it contains,....and was wondering whether it's as healthy as everyone makes it out to be??

Answer: When it comes to caffeine, green tea may offer the best of both worlds -- just enough to brighten the mood, but not enough to trigger sleepless nights. The average cup of green tea contains about 20 mg of caffeine, while black tea has about 40 mg, and drip coffee packs a nerve-jangling punch of 90-150 mg. Although some who are sensitive to caffeine may find that drinking green tea (especially in large amounts) keeps them awake at night, most people don't have this problem. That may be because green tea also contains theanine, an amino acid that functions as a natural tranquilizer.

For those who are really serious about limiting their caffeine, there is always the option of drinking decaffeinated tea. But beware, as the standard way of decaffeinating tea (using ethyl acetate) obliterates about 70 percent of green tea’s catechins.

As to the benifits of green tea
Tea is the most commonly consumed beverage in the world after water. Whether it is black tea, green tea or red (oolong) tea, they all contain polyphenols which give tea its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants may help protect our body from free radical damage. Indeed, tea ranks as high as or higher than many fruits and vegetables in the ORAC score, a score which measures antioxidant potential of plant-based foods.

Why is green tea better than the rest?
Green tea is the least processed tea. They are simply steamed quickly. Black and red teas are partially dried, crushed and fermented.

Benefits of Green Tea
Numerous studies have demonstrated the anti-cancer properties of polyphenols. Some studies indeed suggested that tea's polyphenols may reduce risk of gastric, esophageal and skin cancers if one consumes 4 to 6 cups daily. Other laboratory studies have found that polyphenols help prevent blood clotting and lower cholesterol levels.
Tea also helps lose weight, because of the way it goes through the body and lets it digest.
